Chapter Four
The next morning I entered Marigoldâs office before school started as she asked. I was greeted with a warm smile. I shut the door behind me and then took a seat in a chair in front of Marigoldâs desk. There was a framed photo perched in the corner of the desk of a young man with dark brown hair holding a baby in a pink blanket with Marigold looking a little bit younger. On the other side of him, it looked like someone had been torn out of the photo.
âThatâs your father, Patrick.â She smiled warmly at the photo. âThat was the day you were brought home from the hospital.â
I nodded, smiling at the photo. It was the first photo I had ever seen of my father. Looking at him now, I realized that I looked a lot like him. I didnât have much resemblance to my mother. I looked at the torn edge of the photo and figured it was my mother that had been torn out.
Seeing the man I never got to know sombered my mood. Then, I remembered what Marigold had told me. That it was power that took him away. It was power that made my mom flee. I wanted nothing to do with this power if that was what it cost.
âWhat do we need to do for this ritual?â
Marigold smiled. âItâs simple. You will grant your powers to be stripped and thatâs it. There are some minor details that you donât need to worry about that Iâll handle.â
âAnd Iâll be safe?â If I was being honest, I was still worried about it. I didnât grow up in a world where magic was real, so I had no idea what this ritual could do to me.
âYes.â She saw my eyes wander over to the picture of my father. âWhat happened to your father was an unfortunate accident. We know better now. And we wonât have anyone in the way.â Somehow, I knew that person she was talking about was my mother.
âWhen do we do this?â I asked. I wanted to get it over with and move on with my life. I was in Rosenwood to learn about my family and I didnât want these powers to ruin anything more for me.
âWe can do it as soon as tonight.â
âSounds good to me.â I put on a brave face, sure of my decision. I just wasnât really brave about it.
âWonderful.â She clapped her hands together. âIâll get everything ready today and Iâll be at your room as soon as night has fully fallen.â
âWell, I better get to my desk. School should start soon.â I suddenly felt uncomfortable. This woman was my grandmother, so I told myself that I could trust her. But I didnât feel that loving bond we were supposed to share. I still felt rather awkward around her.
âPlease shut the door behind you. I have calls to make,â she said as I left the room.
I was suddenly startled by Willow standing outside the door, out of view from the room.
